Incarceration and Gladue

This podcast discusses the over-representation of Indigenous Peoples in Correctional Institutions, with a focus on Indigenous women, solitary confinement, and the ground-breaking case of Ashley Smith. Sophie Porter is from Toronto, Ontario. Sophie studied Sociology and Health Studies at Queen's University and earned her JD from Dalhousie University in April 2025. Sophie volunteers with the Elizabeth Fry Society and PATH Legal and is articling with a full-service firm in Toronto.
Rachel Portelance is from Calgary, Alberta. Rachel studied Life Sciences and Psychology at Queen’s University and earned a JD from Dalhousie University in April 2025. She completed a term with the Dalhousie Legal Aid Clinic and volunteered with reachAbility Legal Services while in law school. Rachel will be articling for the Government of Ontario in the Crown Law Office – Criminal.
